Robert B. Edgerton summarizes the history of African-American soldiers from colonial times onward. The title reflects his belief that until recently American society has insisted that black troops were cowardly or incompetent and ignored or concealed their accomplishments. This prejudice co-existed for decades with a seemingly contradictory fear of arming African Americans.
