Abstract The characteristics of skin hair follicle structure of Hezuo swine were investigated using frozen section method and HE staining. Experimental results showed that the hair root, hair tip, outer sheath, inner sheath, hair follicle group, fibrous sheath, outer epidermis, inner epidermis, sebaceous gland and other organizational structures of hair follicles of Hezuo swine can be clearly observed. The hair follicle pore size varied extremely significantly (P<0.01) among different parts, showing a downward trend of shoulder < body side < buttocks; the hair follicle density ranged from 5.59 to 7.26 hair follicles/mm^sup 2^. This study provides reference for the industrial and medical applications.

Hezuo swine is a typical plateau-type pig, which is mainly distributed in Shannan and Qamdo of Tibet, Aba and Ganzi of Sichuan Province, Diqing of Yunnan Province, Hezuo, Zhayou and Jiamuguan of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and Qinghai Province. Hezuo swine is a small plateau original landrace growing under poor growth environment and longterm low level of productivity. The weight of adult swine is 28.5-32.5 kg, body length is 67.0-70.0 cm, chest measurement is 70.4 -73.8 cm, and body height is 44.0-47.9 cm. Hezuo swine is covered with black hair with a small amount of white spots in the shoulder and abdomen, with long and dense bristles, thin skin, dense villi, robust limbs, quick action, strong constitution, and obvious development rules of skin hair follicles'1"21. Recent studies report that the skin hair follicles of miniature pigs are similar to human hair follicles in the structure, physiology, hair follicle growth cycle and cross antigens. Miniature pigs have been increasingly used as new models for experimental researches in dermatology, surgery, toxicology and fields*5"9, therefore pig hair follicle might be an ideal alternative model for researches of human hair follicles. In this study, frozen section method and HE staining were adopted to observe the morphological structure of hair follicles of Hezuo swine and measure the hair follicle pore size at different parts, in order to investigate the characteristics of skin hair follicles of Hezuo swine and provide support for the industrial and medical applications.
