Abstract

According to officials, more than 28 000 cases of dengue have been confirmed in this central American country since the beginning of the year. 54 people have died from dengue as of last week. According to the latest report by the Pan American Health Organization, although Honduras is the fourth country in terms of the total number of dengue cases, it has the highest proportion of severe dengue cases (type 1 and 2) of any of the countries facing dengue fever in the region: 3·59%. According to Fernández, the paediatric dengue ward at San Pedro Sula's main hospital has reported treating as many as 50 patients in a single day.
