Abstract

The main purpose of this work is to analyze time in the lyrical poetry of Horace and Carlos Drummond de Andrade. It can be observed along the centuries the maintenance and the alternation of the lyrical elements along the centuries in the history of western literature. Time can be considered as the motivating actor via the notorious Horace's carpe diem, in Odes and epodes; time can also be taken as the cause to the following subthemes: a) the brief life b) the death c) the antinomy youth-old age d) the pleasures of life e) the eternal life of the poet by art. Then, the presence and the form of the main theme - time - will be analyzed as it is presented in Drummond's work - Nova Reunião: 19 livros de poesia (New Reunion: 19 books of poetry).
