This book is contributed by three HR practitioners as a result of their experience of several decades and in-depth understanding of the subject. The book provides enriching case studies from 19 different organizations and each chapter is elaborated with real life corporate examples that make the book not only interesting but also engaging from an HR practitioners' point of view. This book focuses on the various HR functions and how they play an important role in the organization. The book is organized into seven parts and systematically addresses HR functions in different dimensions.
The first part "HR refreshed" discusses about four themes namely "through the eyes of the beholder" which discusses about the role, positioning and functions of HR over the years and lays bare the distinction between HR functions and its practitioners in terms of centrality and experience with profession. Authors also discuss about the evolving expectations of the stakeholders in terms of doing new things in the areas of making organization effective by developing organizational capabilities, shaping organizational culture and facilitating change and doing existing things in new ways in the area of employee relations through employee engagement. The other aspects of how to manage people by making it more contemporary and bring people on board by improving hiring practices and quality, are also covered. The authors discuss areas of HR functions where it is doing good or meeting expectation according to business view and HR view. There is a perception gap between how the business leaders rate HR and how HR professionals rate themselves. The authors discuss about it in terms of-Doing, Feeling and Thinking. By Doing means the task, functions related to HR administration. Feeling refers to concern, care and welfare for people and thinking relate to strategic orientation.
In Part 2, "Bringing people on Board", the authors talk about three things, i.e., planning in uncertain times, remaining attractive, choosing right. Firstly, the authors discussed about planning in uncertain times as organization has undergone significant change in the past few decades in terms of how to get the work done.
