Raw pet food diets are increasingly popular and risk posing greater threats to human health, including fatal illness, says Public Health England (PHE).
In 2017, there was a rise in human cases of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infections from raw meat-based pet food, the agency said.
Cases like these remain rare but PHE said more should be done to raise awareness of the risks and to improve hygiene practices when handling raw food.
