The updated edition of this substantial work is primarily aimed at non-specialist and high school readers, and builds on the "solid foundations" of its 2000 first edition. This second edition includes updated entries on approximately 450 conditions and diseases (AIDS and cancer are highlighted) and also emphasises the importance of healthy living. There are also 85 new entries on diseases, some of which were almost unknown at the time of the first edition in 2000, for example SARS. This guide also incorporates entries for some more socially oriented problems, such as internet addiction. Additionally, this new edition gives more emphasis to women in medicine.
This work is divided into four volumes alphabetically: A to C, D to I, J to R, and S to Z. Entries are clearly laid out and uncluttered, and make excellent use of coloured sidebars to expand on the main entries. Headings are in a slightly larger font, with the main heading in reddish-pink and sub-headings in clear black type. Some entries...
