Jaroslav Pelikan, the Sterling Professor of History Emeritus at Yale University, needs no introduction to the readers of this journal. His Jesus through the Centuries:His Place in the History of Culture, published by Yale University Press in 1985, attained a circulation of more than 100,000 copies and translations in more than a dozen languages.
