The incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) correlates strongly with low birth weight. In the United States and other highly developed countries, the incidence of ROP rose dramatically once the ability to save very low birth weight infants became more routine. The consequences of decreased infant mortality rates in developing middle-income countries include the medical conditions associated with the survival of very low birth weight infants.
