Health experts in India have welcomed a move by the prime minister, Narendra Modi, to increase the retirement of age of doctors employed by the central government from 60-62 to 65 years to meet the shortfall of doctors in the country.
Figures for 2015 show that India has one government doctor for every 11528 people. 1 The shortage of doctors especially affects poor people, who depend on public health services for their healthcare because they cannot afford to pay.
