Abstract
From 1985 to 1996 she was the Medical Director of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT), which grew out of RCT, and she is now its ambassador. In 2003, 924 people who had been tortured sought the help of the five centres run by the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (HRFT), where their signs of torture are documented and they are offered rehabilitation. Turkey is seeking entry to the European Union, and the government has recently strengthened its anti-torture laws, but the problem lies in their implementation, she told the US Congressional Human Rights Caucus earlier this year.
