As the title implies, this textbook focuses on symptom complexes and relates them to scientific principles, based on anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology. This approach is entirely consistent with the technique of problem-based learning, dedicated to the basic understanding of diseases and their effects, rather than to memorization of lists.
The book is divided into 2 main sections: the first focuses on these clinical problems, the second on clinical practice. The target audience in Canada would be those surgical residents in their early years of training, preparing for the Royal College Principles of Surgery examination.
