AIT: Circular Economy is not a new concept to the aluminium industry. In this new proposal, what is at stake for your industry?
Gerd Götz: Aluminium can claim to be a permanent material, one for which the inherent properties do not change during use and the repeated recycling phase into new products. Recycling is a very tangible way of how our industry contributes to a more sustainable and energy efficient economy.
Our industry is agile, innovative and eager to transition to a circular economy. Recently, our members opened two big recycling centres, bringing the total to more than 220 recycling plants across Europe. This is a strong basis on which to further build the circular economy.
Now we need to consider how to accelerate this process through legislation and voluntary initiatives from the industry. We need greater cooperation between Member States and enforcement of legislation.
