This book is the third edition of Decision Systems for Inventory Management and Production Planning published in 1979 and 1985. David Pyke became a coauthor for this edition and played a key role in writing major updates of several chapters, including those on supply-chain management, multi-echelon inventories, just in time, and ERP (enterprise resource planning). In addition, the authors have added spreadsheet programs for each chapter as supplemental materials to enhance the readership and applicability for students in business administration programs, and for practitioners.
As the authors point out in the preface, the primary objective of the book is to bridge the gap between theories and realworld problems. The authors have incorporated their experiences with real-world problems in the book. They have also drawn on the findings of other scholars and practitioners who have successfully implemented theories in practice. They have developed spreadsheet programs for many procedures to achieve the objective.
