Born in Bogota in 1962, Ivar Da Coll began his association with children's literature as a puppeteer. He is a self-taught artist, and is one of the few people in Colombia who work full-time as an author and illustrator of children's books. He has won two Camara Colombiana del Libro awards for his book covers, and has twice been named to the IBBY Honour List. In 1990, he won the ACLIJ Best Children's Book in Colombia award for Torta de cumpleanos (The birthday cake; Carlos Valencia Editores, 1989).
