One of three children, James Brian Meredith Davies was educated at Bedford school (1931-8). He played cricket for 1st XI and became triple jump champion. He followed his father (a GP) and his older sister into medicine. A leading light in amateur dramatics, he met his wife, Charlotte, a nurse at St Mary's, when pursuing this hobby. He was a house physician for Sir George Pickering before serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps for three years.
Brian worked as deputy medical officer of health for Ulverston (1948-50), Oxford (1950-3), and, finally, Liverpool (as Andrew Semple's deputy, in 1953-69).
