James Petigru Boyce: A Southern Baptist Statesman is the fourth volume of the American Reformed Biographies series by Presbyterian and Reformed Publishing. The promising series aims to provide biographies of significant Reformed leaders that are scholarly enough to be of service to academicians and accessible enough to engage the non-specialist (10-1). Boyce is certainly deserving of being included in such a series, as he was one of the Southern Baptist's significant systematic theologians and served as the first president of the movement 's first seminary.
The author of James Petigru Boyce is Thomas Nettles, a leading Baptist historian. Nettles has taught Baptist history for over thirty years in four key seminaries (Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary), and he has written a number of important works, particularly Baptists and the Bible with Russ Bush (Moody, 1980; revised and expanded, Broadman and Holman, 1999).
