V. GEORGE SHILLINGTON (ed.), Jesus and His Parables: Interpreting the Parables of Jesus Today (Edinburgh: T & T. Clark, 1997). Pp. xvi + 199. Paper 02.95.
This collection of essays on select parables of Jesus opens with an introductory essay by the editor, "Engaging with the Parables" (pp. 1-20). The first part contains two studies on parables of the temple: "A Tale of Two Taxations (Luke 18:10-14b)" by Michael Farris (pp. 23-33), and "Alien Grace (Luke 10:30-36)" by J. Ian H. McDonald (pp. 35-51). The second part, on parables of the land, features "The Foolish Landowner (Luke 12:16b-20)" by Mary Ann Beavis (pp. 55-68), and "Vulnerable Promise from the Land (Mark 4:3b-8)" by Donald Peters (pp. 69-84). Part three, on parables of the economy, presents "Saving Life and Keeping Sabbath (Matt 20:lb-15)" by V. George Shillington (pp. 87-101), "Entrusted Money (Matt 25:14-28)" by Joel R. Wohlgemut (pp. 103-20), and "Exposing the Depth of Oppression (Luke 16: 1 b-8)" by Paul Trudinger (pp. 121-37). The final section, on parables of the people, presents "A Dysfunctional Family and Its Neighbours (Luke 15:11 b-32)" by Richard L. Rohrbaugh (pp. 141-64), "The Shocking Prospect of Killing the Messiah (Luke 20:9-19)" by I C. O'Neill (pp. 165-76), and "Unexpected Banquet People (Luke 14:16-24)" by Willard M. Swartley (pp. 177-90). Brief indexes of authors, Scripture references, and other ancient sources round out the volume.
