Readers of this journal will be familiar with Campbell's contributions to the study of the so-called Deuteronomistic History, especially his recent joint offering with Mark A. O'Brien, Unfolding the Deuteronomistic History: Origins, Upgrades, Present Text (Minneapolis: Fortress, 2003). As indicated in the title of the work under review, Joshua to Chronicles, C. has expanded the scope of his investigations to include the other major historical work found in the OT, the Books of Chronicles. This title is somewhat misleading, however, in that 1 and 2 Chronicles are covered in conjunction with those sections of Samuel and Kings that present parallel material. Ostensibly because of the lack of scholarly consensus regarding the authorship of, or at least the relationship between, Chronicles and the Books of Ezra-Nehemiah, these latter postexilic books are not included in C.'s investigations, apart from a half-page disclaimer.
