During the U.S. Civil War, a number of European powers sent officers to visit both sides and observe military operations. They were the subject of a fine study by Jay Luvaas, published in 1959. Of the observers themselves, perhaps the best known was Arthur James Lyon Fremantle, the British observer whose diary became a major contribution to the literature on the war.
