Students of World War II in the Pacific will most likely agree that few books have been anticipated more avidly and for a longer time than David Evans and Mark R Peattie's Kaigun. Indeed, the anticipation may be such as to qualify the appearance of this tome from Naval Institute Press as a publishing "event." An article antecedent to the present work, by Hoover Institution scholar Mark Peattie, who has published distinguished works on the Japanese empire and on Japan in the South Pacific, appeared as early as 1977. David Evans, a University of Richmond Japanese expert, joined Peattie on this project at the end of the 1980s, and both have been contributing papers...
