Multi-Color, based in Cincinnati, OH, recently improved productivity 30% in less than a week in the finishing area of its Scottsburg, IN, plant. This was accomplished via a "Kaizen Event." ("Kaizen" means "change for the better" in Japanese.) The event is a system of small improvements made using conventional knowledge, as opposed to productivity improvements from capital-intensive technology and equipment. The changes are implemented over a period of days, rather than months or weeks, as a highly focused event. The Multi-Color event was orchestrated by The Inst. of Advanced Mfg. Sciences (IAMS), an organization of tri-state manufacturers in southwestern Ohio that provides manufacturing solutions for companies in southwest Ohio and elsewhere.
