While the name of Baldassare Galuppi (1706-1785) may be familiar to readers from Robert Browning's poem A Toccata of Galuppi's, his music is relatively little known today. He was, however, one of the most successful Italian composers of the eigh- teenth century. Galuppi occupied a promi- nent position in Venetian musical life as choirmaster of San Marco and two ospedali, achieved international fame with his prodi- gious operatic output, and contributed to the development of the dramma giocoso through his midcentury collaborations with the playwright Carlo Goldoni. "II Buranello," as Galuppi was nicknamed after his birthplace of Burano in the Venetian la- goon, was also a celebrated organ and harpsichord performer and a prolific com- poser for the keyboard.
