Abstract

[...]it aims to demonstrate that Dewey's realism, characterized as naturalist, offers important contributions to the current epistemology when placed in a viewpoint contrary to objectivism, but without ignoring science. The tendency of modern science to substitute qualitative events, marked by certain similar properties and by recurrences, for the older notion of fixed substances in shown to agree with the attitude of naive experience, while both point to the idea of matter and mind as significant characters of events, presented in different contexts, rather than underlying and ultimate substances (Dewey, 1958, p. 11). The office of physical science is to discover those properties and relations of things in virtue of which they are capable of being used as instrumentalities; physical science makes claim to disclose not the inner nature of things but only those connections of things with one another that determine outcomes and hence can be used as means (p. 12). Del proceso que abarca de una experiencia inicial a la experiencia reflexiva encontramos una situación de acción y reacción del pensamiento, que se van constituyendo y mejorando alrededor de una inteligencia operativa y reflexiva al mismo tiempo. Since the psychological movement necessarily coincided with that which set up physical objects as correspondingly complete and self-enclosed, there resulted that dualism of mind and matter, of a physical and psychical world, which from the day of Descartes to the present dominates the formulation of philosophical problems (p. 15).
