Abstract

Anne Hutchinson moved from England to Boston, Massachussets in 1634 where in 1637 and 1638 was tried for insubordination, and finally convicted, excommunicated and expelled as a deviant and dangerous woman tainted with antinomian ideas. Her intellectual and political role had a special relevance in the burning history of early puritan America. Itala Vivan's essay analyses this figure -who was variously discussed and appreciated through past centuries- on the basis of a rich bibliography, but more especially going back to listen to Anne's very voice as it resonates in the detailed accounts of her examination, reported verbatim by contemporary records.
