Latinos Beyond Reel , produced and directed by Miguel Picker and Chyng Sun, is a new documentary that explores the representation of Latinas and Latinos in the mass media from the earliest depictions of bandidos, greasers and spitfires to contemporary images of Latinos during a time of immigrant phobia and increased border security. This documentary is similar to its precursors, particularly The Bronze Screen , for its reflection on the most persistent stereotypes of Latinos, but it goes beyond The Bronze Screen to deepen and expand the media and generic context of popular culture representations. Given its mass media bent and engaging narration, it has the potential to address a very wide audience and could be used as readily in a secondary school classroom as in a college classroom. Interviews and commentary from a diverse slate of cultural producers and critics from renowned scholars, activists, writers, actors and actresses, producers, journalists and directors frame the narration of the film - including Charles Ramírez Berg, Otto Santa Ana, Angharad Valdivia, Federico Subveri, Mari Castañeda, Chon Noriega, Isabel Molina, Alex Nogales, Juan González, Moctesuma Esparza, Josefina López, Alex Rivera, Luis Ramos and Lisa Vidal.
