Abstract

The 19th century and the early decades of the 20th saw mass migrations of Europeans and Asians to America. The flow originating from a tiny valley of the French Lower Alps, Barcelonnette, has been quite exceptional, as almost all of the migrants went to Mexico and did so crescendo, up to the First World War. Even if only part of them made a fortune out of their main activity (the trade of tissues, clothes and novelties), they all benefited from the work of these immigrants. Most of them had rooted themselves in what proved to be an economic nest, although its profits went to a minority. [PUB ABSTRACT]
