Abstract

Behind the theory of the Chinese economic miracle lies the belief that the economic reforms, which began in 1979, made a clean break from Maoism and from other experiences of the past. This article presents two case studies of Chinese businesses which were set up in the 1920s and which went on to become large industrial groups. These companies, which suffered the devastating effects of Japanese occupation and the division of the Cold War, were pioneers in the industrialisation model based on foreign trade which China would eventually adopt at the end of the century.
