Madan Mohan Gupta was born in Arrah, Bihar. He was one of six children. His father was a high school headmaster and his mother a homemaker. His early education took place in Bihar. After qualifying he became chief malaria officer in Arrah.
He travelled to the UK in 1964, and after initially pursuing a career in paediatrics, he opted to become a general practitioner. In 1972 he settled in Oldham, Lancashire, where he excelled in his chosen profession. He maintained a special interest in paediatrics and child health.
