Mass hysterectomies in India

Abstract

A bitter controversy has arisen in India because many severely mentally retarded women in India have undergone hysterectomies. Groups are protesting because the operations were intended to prevent pregnancy, but they also could have been done to maintain hygiene--which the women could not manage to do during menstruation.
