In Memoriam: James Madison Nabrit Jr.; 1900-1997
A giant figure in the civil rights battles of the 1940s and 1950s and later president of Howard University, James Madison Nabrit Jr., died at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, on December 27, 1997. Dr. Nabrit was being treated for a viral infection. He was 97 years old.
Born in Atlanta, Nabrit was the eldest of eight children. His father was a Baptist minister who made ends meet by holding a second job as a baker. The young James attended high school at Morehouse College and stayed on to earn his bachelor's degree...
