The following remembrance was prepared with substantial input from individuals who lived and worked with Joe Schiappacasse. We are especially grateful to Ruth Ryan for providing details of Joe's life and rich personal reflections that only a very close friend could share.
Joe Schiappacasse was a leader and a rich contributor in the field of positive behavior support. Joe died on March 13, 2002, at age 50, of complications of emergency bypass surgery. Joe is sorely missed, but his legacy is treasured.
Joe was born June 14, 1951, in Detroit, Michigan. His father was a "produce man" and his mother a social worker. Joe's family was always oriented toward the needs of others. One brother is deaf and has cerebral palsy, and all of his siblings have worked in one way or another to help people learn, cope, and enjoy life. In high school, Joe lived in and attended the Notre Dame seminary and later attended Wayne State University. He earned his degree from the University of Colorado. In 1980, Joe married Barbara, and their daughter, Rosie, came along shortly afterwards. Rosie had numerous serious disabilities that were caused by medical malpractice. Joe and Barbara were told to forget her. They did not, and she grew into a sweet, beaming girl who was a great joy to her family and friends. Their son, Tony, came...
