Rx
For 60 mL
Metronidazole 500 mg
Methylcellulose 1 % solution 30 mL
Sodium chloride 540 mg
Purified water qs 60 mL
METHOD OF PREPARATION
1. Calculate the required quantity of each ingrethent for the total amount to be prepared.
2. Weigh and/or measure each ingrethent accurately.
3. Mix the metronidazole powder with the methylcellulose 1 % solution to form a smooth paste.
4. Dissolve the sodium chloride separately in 30 mL of purified water.
5. Add die sodium chloride solution slowly to the metronidazole mixture and mix well.
6. Add sufficient purified water to final volume and mix well.
7. Package and label.
PACKAGING
Package in tight, light-resistant containers.1
LABELING
Keep out of reach of children. Use only as directed.
STABILITY
A beyond-use date of 14 days when stored in a refrigerator can be used for this preparation.1
USE
Metronidazole enema has been used in the treatment of infections susceptible to metronidazole in the rectal or vaginal cavities.
QUALITY CONTROL
Quality -control assessment can include weight/volume, pH, specific gravity, active drug assay, color, clarity, rheological properties/pourability, physical observation, and physical stability (discoloration, foreign materials, gas formation, mold growth).2
