Abstract

Intense genetic selection of broilers strains due to the economical requirements for finishing in the less time possible and with the fastest weight gain has caused abnormal physiological behaviors such as damage in muscle tissues comprising deep pectoral myopathy. The latter is an ischemic disease in broilers which leads towards degeneration, necrosis and fibrosis of the deep pectoral muscle (supracoracoideus). Incidence in chickens and hens is highly relevant especially because its detection is only possible after deboning, through the separation of the breast muscles from the bones. It is often confused with a hematoma during management and transportation, with difficult solution. It is actually a serious quality issue in abattoirs and may be a great liability. Current analysis describes aspects of deep pectoral myopathy in broilers to facilitate diagnosis by the Inspection Services. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
