The Most Typical Avant-Garde: History and Geography of Minor Cinemas in Los Angeles by David E. James University of California Press, $29.95
David James is among the best academic critics of the American avant-garde cinema. His Allegories of Cinema (89) is still the only credible successor to Visionary Film, R Adams Sitney's seminal critical history of the movement. And his new book is carefully researched, richly detailed, and often quite engaging.
It's a shame he can't bring himself to just write about movies.
