Abstract

The Raymond Corp. (Greene, New York) is a major materials handling equipment manufacturer, with class A manufacturing resource planning (MRP II) facilities in Greene and Brantford, Ontario, and an aftermark distribution facility in East Syracuse, New York. Prior to the implementation of MRP II in its Greene plant, good intentions and hard work were proving to be less than necessary to compete in the global market. Certified class A in February 1990, the Raymond Corp. has built a world-class organization from these foundations. It started its MRP II process by sending all its top management off campus to learn from experts about MRP II in an uninterrupted environment. Top management is a key to success and must be committed to the program. Next, a team of upper middle managers was established to act as the implementation team. The task group of functional managers began by breaking the task into 6 pieces. The steps were: 1. education, 2. common goal, 3. fitness for use, 4. accountability, 5. performance measurement, and 6. systems and tools.
