Abstract

Military psychologists have a lot of responsibility. Their daily decisions affect individuals, families and the effectiveness of entire military units. Solid leadership skills are absolutely essential to the psychologists' ability to perform their military duties. The unique skills required of the military psychologist combine a mastery of traditional clinical psychology and an understanding of the functions and needs of the modern military. Although there are many challenges, a career in the armed forces is a very exciting and rewarding option for clinical psychologists. The hereby paper briefly describes the development of the profession of military psychology and various roles of the military psychologist through the years, starting from the Revolutionary War until the Vietnam War.
