Abstract
Needs assessment is the foundation of effective and efficient education programme planning and it is important that the assessment is valid and reliable. Successful continuing medical education and continuing professional development (CME/CPD) interventions are those that focus on predetermined and specific needs.1 Unfortunately, much CME/CPD planning is still based on the paternalistic view that the planners and specialists know what's best for physicians. However, a well conducted needs assessment can be used to develop CME/CPD programmes that are relevant and meet the specific needs of physicians in the target audience.
