Some ARSC Journal readers may already know Document Records. Johnny Parth established it in Vienna, Austria, with a series of vinyl LP reissues of rare pre-1943 (''pre-war'') blues performances. In 1990 Parth began issuing CDs with the aim of reissuing all pre-war blues and black sacred music, with the exception of those artists issued by the major labels, such as Robert Johnson and Bessie Smith by Sony/Columbia. Document organized its reissues by artist in chronological and matrix-number order. Many takes came from a variety of sources (which were acknowledged in Document's catalogs through 1999), and so the playback sound from track to track varied accordingly. Nonetheless, by 1999 Parth achieved his goal for blues and sacred after issuing over 560 discs in the 5000 series, and 50 in the 6000 series. His achievement has had a huge impact on blues record...
