'WE welcome many of the proposals in the O'Neill review and applaud his team in producing a comprehensive global report on a very complex subject. NOAH and its members are committed to limiting the development of antibiotic resistance, by promoting responsible use and stewardship of antibiotics to preserve them for future generations. However, we believe a number of proposals in the O'Neill Review specific to the veterinary sector lack context and evidence, and our response seeks to address these.'
So said Dawn Howard, chief executive of the National Office of Animal Health (NOAH), speaking on July 28 on publication of its response to Lord Jim O'Neill's Review on Antimicrobial Resistance (VR , May 21, 2016, vol 178, pp 514, 515-516). In its response, NOAH, which represents the UK animal medicines industry, says that the important role that antibiotics and other veterinary medicines play in the production of an affordable, sustainable food supply must be recognised, and that, while steps can be taken to reduce unnecessary use in livestock, antibiotics will remain an important tool in maintaining animal health and welfare.
