The discipline of nursing informatics is a young one, but the specialty has grown so rapidly that it touches almost every type of nursing practice. Electronic medical records, genetics, and simulation are a few common examples of informatics. The need for exact measurements for small pediatric and neonatal clients drove changes in pharmaceuticals. This issue of Pediatric Nursing includes efforts by Kartika and colleagues (2021) to avoid emergency resuscitations by detecting signs of patient deterioration through recognizing their abnormal vital sign values. Interestingly, other authors recognized the same problem but used a different approach (Valentino et al., 2020). They incorporated an alert message on the medical record screen and included visual reminders of indicated actions when abnormal values are displayed. Kartika and colleagues (2021) described modifying a monitoring tool and applying it with pediatric patients to predict an increased risk for deterioration.
