Abstract
In November 2010, the Silvio Santos Group loaned R$ 2.5 billion from the Fundo Garantidor de Crdito, in order to settle the assets of the Panamericano Bank. The loan became necessary after the Central Bank of Brazil found accounting inconsistencies in the statements of the Panamericano Bank. This paper describes and analyzes, from the standpoint of ethics, the facts already disclosed on the case of the inconsistencies found in the financial statements of Panamericano Bank, in an attempt to conclude whether the decisions made by the administrators of the bank, the Caixa Econmica Federal, and the independent auditors were ethically correct. For that, a method of ethical evaluation described by Merchant and Van der Stede was used. It consists of six steps, starting with the identification of the ethical dilemma and ending with the evaluation of the decisions made. The analysis made it possible to conclude that the administrators of Panamericano Bank, of Caixa Econmica Federal and the independent auditors made decisions that on an ethical perspective were immoral.
