John Whitney Evans, historian and retired faculty member at the College of St. Scholastica, died of congestive heart failure on July 14, 2002, in Duluth, Minnesota. On the third floor of the Scholastica library-most appropriately under a statue of Cardinal John Henry Newman-is a plaque dedicating a section of the library to his memory and honoring him for his outstanding contributions to the college as a priest, professor, and archivist. At the Mass of Christian Burial, on July 18, 2002, at St. John's Church, Duluth, Bishop Dennis Schnurr, observing the overflowing congregation, noted the impact of this priest professor.
Father Evans-"Whit" to his many friends-was born on August 6, 1931, in Kansas City, Missouri. Following his graduation from Cathedral High School, Duluth, now the Marshall School, he prepared for the priesthood at Nazareth Hall Seminary, St. Paul, and the Saint Paul Seminary, receiving the M.A. degree in church history in 1957. he was ordained for the Diocese of Duluth on June 1, 1957.
