Former consultant community physician west Midlands (q UCH 1951; FFCM), died suddenly on 28 October 1997. The son of a psychiatrist, he took his diploma in public health in 1962 and then held various posts in public health before being appointed area medical officer in Solihull. At the West Midlands Regional Health Authority he was responsible for psychiatry, geriatric medicine, and special care groups. He travelled a great deal and was involved in developing services throughout England's largest region, which had 22 districts. He was a member of all the main committees, playing a vital part in the closure of many asylums, the creation of academic departments at Keele and Birmingham, and the fostering of many specialties, such as services for brain damaged patients and peripartum psychiatry. After retirement he continued his work at Birmingham University, organising innovative multidisciplinary study days and working with voluntary organisations. He was a self effacing, loquacious man with a great personal charm and diplomatic skills. He leaves a wife, Rosemary (a doctor), a son (a doctor), and two daughters (one a doctor). Both his daughters live in Australia, where he established a second home.
