Abstract

In the 1950s Mathé's work on bone marrow transplantation in animals had shown that donor cells would survive and prosper only if the recipient animal had first been irradiated to neutralise its own immune system. Some observers think he should have shared the 1990 Nobel Prize for bone marrow transplantation awarded to Edward Donnall Thomas.
