Joseph H. Lynch, Distinguished Professor of History and Joe and Elizabeth Engle Professor in the Study of the History of Christianity in Ohio State University, died on December 27, 2008, after a long illness. He was a summa cum laude graduate of Boston College and received a PhD from Harvard University under the direction of Giles Constable. He was the author of four books, beginning with Simoniacal Entry into Religious Life from 1000 to 1260 (Columbus, OH, 1976), which traced the practice of gift-giving on entry into the monastic life from its broad acceptance to the efforts of reformers to end the practice as simoniacal in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
