Abstract
The development of better hearing protection for Royal Air Force (RAF) personnel, the occupational health of textile workers, and the hazards of eating cassava are three apparently disparate issues that each, at various times in his life, held the attention of Ronald Hinchcliff e. As a physician specialising in hearing and balance problems his interest in the fi rst is unsurprising; in the other two it is less obvious. The period coincided with the introduction of the jet engine, and much of his time was taken up with testing noise protection equipment for pilots and ground crews.
