For centuries, the Sacrament of the Altar has been the heart of Christian worship. Many books have been written to help us understand this great mystery of faith and to depict its outer manifestation in the history of the Church. A new book on this subject is Offertorium, written by Arnold Angenendt, professor emeritus of the Department of Catholic Theology of Münster University and a trendsetter in the debate on the Christian Middle Ages. Angenendt's book focuses on the celebration of the Eucharist that became, over the course of centuries, the execution of a sacrifice.
