EDMUND KEELEY, THE PROMINENT translator of twentieth-century Greek poets, especially George Seferis and C. P. Cavafy, reflects on his many years as a literary translator and as a professor of translation workshops in the essays and interviews collected in On Translation. Several of the works included here have previously been published in journals. Thus, the articles and interviews give the reader an overall view of Keeley the translator, the writer, and the teacher. Many of the refined comments that he makes about the art and craft of translation evolve from his own biography. At Princeton in the1960s, he was one of the first instructors in this country to introduce translation workshops as a regular feature of creative writing.
