It is claimed that assembly cycle times are typically cut by about 20 per cent and setup times for PCB lines are reduced from hours to minutes with the aid of a computer-aided production engineering system introduced to Britain in March. The gains are most startling for assembly lines with machines from different vendors, and the system opens up opportunities for users to bring together in one line the machines which are most efficient for a particular task, as well as achieving the optimum balance between machines.
Known as EXALINE, the system is a product of Tecnomatix Technologies, already well known for the ROBCAD system which links CAD and automated production processes in the automotive industry, and VALISYS for computer-aided quality engineering.
